Unedited and Free Improvisations on Great Hymns of the Faith

Please visit this page weekly for more improvisations.

These recordings are not intended to be perfect, but are the response, at last, to many requests that I record and share my sacred playing. These, for the most part, are true improvisations, conceived and performed at the time of recording with little or no prior preparation.

I’ve got two improvisations for you today. 🙂 Enjoy! Also – visit my Discography page to see my CD that released on December 1st.

When Peace Like a River

Thursday, October 19, 2017

CD release is coming in the next 6 weeks (working on artwork for the cover, deciding on track order, and a few other formatting things…final stretch!). In the meantime, a slightly edited improv upon Blessed Assurance. Had a couple of spots that just were not acceptable to put on my website…and I left a couple in there. 😉

Blessed Assurance

I’m going to give you two recordings today because it’s been so long since I posted here. Both improvs are on the same hymn; similar in concepts, but different too. In a practice room, so excuse the quality.

Holy, Holy, Holy

You are about to have the ability to enjoy some of my improvs without having to click “play” each time you want to listen to one. My CD is in the editing stages and will be released in October of this year. If you would like to support this second stage of the production process follow this link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/great-hymns-of-the-faith-piano-cd#/.

In case you hadn’t heard, I recorded my first sacred solo CD in May. Here’s a sneak preview of what is to come. Unedited, per usual. (Not saying the CD won’t have edits, but for now – it is as is!)

He Leadeth Me

Sunday, May 7, 2017

Today’s improv is on In Shady Green Pastures. Rather fitting for springtime and, for a personal note, green is one of my absolute favorite colors. Peaceful, calming, lush, rich, soothing. Pardon the few foibles. I am making this up as I go…thus, improv. 😉

My Jesus, I Love Thee

Two more improvs for you! A new friend of mine prompted the improv on How Deep the Father’s Love For Us.

Brethren, We Have Met to Worship

How Deep the Father’s Love For Us

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

Finally got my website to cooperate with me and upload my files! Really – my brother is responsible for that. With that, enjoy the following

Oh How Wonderful, Oh Marvelous is My Savior’s Love for Me

Saturday, December 31, 2016

Please indulge me one last time this year. Once again, my half-way impromptu thoughts working themselves out on the piano. Not perfect, but a glimpse into where improving can take me. It is fun. Today’s improv was done entirely by ear.

Another Year is Dawning w/ Hark the Herald Angels Sing – Christ’s birth was a pivotal point in history, a new year for mankind, as it were. It seemed fitting to combine a Christmas carol with Another Year is Dawning as the celebrations for these events take place so close together in our western calendar.

It is the Christmas season at last. Christian hymnody is rich in this time – beautiful and haunting melodies, text that is profound. This particular arrangement/improv has the potential to become a full-blown arrangement. Once again, not perfect, but keeping myself creating at the piano. Have a glimpse into some of my recent thinking and doodling.

What Child is This?

Monday, October 31, 2016  (recorded Friday, October 21)

Today’s improv is quite short. A littler teaser. 🙂

How Can It Be?

Oh the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus – take 2

Sunday, August 14, 2016 (Improvs recorded Friday, August 12, 2016)

Are You Washed in the Blood?

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

And Can It Be That I Should Gain an Interest in My Savior’s Love? (One of my all-time favorite hymns)

Thursday, August 4, 2016

Today I have three improvs for you. I was not pleased with my playing that day in two out of the three, and, as a result, stopped mid-improv more than once on improvs that, to my surprise, were quite nice, though at the time they didn’t seem that way. I’ve included partial and complete ideas for Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It.

Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It

Wonderful Grace of Jesus

Whosoever Will

Well, at some point in their careers, most great composers (in my case – arranger/improver; I like to think of myself as great 😉 ) borrow material from another composer. I have achieved that feat in this improv on When We All Get to Heaven. This hymn was one of my mother’s favorites; she wrote an arrangement of it for handbells and adapted that arrangement for 4 hands. My borrowed material is the rhythm and cluster chord of the accompaniment. My mother always had a joyful, expectant heavenward gaze and it is in honor to her and in fellow musicianship with her that I decided upon improving on this hymn last week.

When We All Get to Heaven, What a Day of Rejoicing That Will Be

I got to record these improvs during my residency last weekend with SMU in Taos. One of my colleagues was practicing near-by. You will hear some extra music in the background in this improv. 🙂

Hallelujah, I Have Found Him

Today’s improvisations are meditations upon the hymns – quiet and calm. Enjoy.

To God Be the Glory with Whiter Than Snow

Kind listeners, today you are going to get a true introduction to what it means to improv, including incorporating a second hymn and then changing keys, without any practice. I’m experimenting in my improving as I attempt to improve and expand what I can do in that medium. It’s a ton of fun, but not always perfectly stunning first time around.

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

It is Holy Week – a significant week for mankind. It is the week in which Christ culminated His work on earth. God become flesh in order to live and die and resurrect for man to make permanent redemption him from his sins possible and open the door for man to have restored fellowship with God. Perfect Divinity ministering to imperfect humanity. Oh the depth of God’s mercy, grace, and love.
